Resources for Learning and Staying Connected Online

As learning continues online this fall, resources are available to help students prepare and adjust. This page provides answers to common questions that students may have when classes and learning move online.

To best support online learning, the university is   transitioning to the Canvas learning management system (LMS).  Students who are new to Canvas and can   view the 30 minute on-demand jumpstart   to learn how to customize their Canvas environment and preview submitting assignments.

Before getting started with Canvas be sure to check whether you have a supported browser, an internal or external microphone, and optional camera.

How do I access my class online?

For courses taught in Canvas, students can access their class online at canvas.northeastern.edu. The Canvas mobile app is popular with students and can be used to access Canvas classes.

Where can I find my class in Canvas ?

The Canvas Dashboard shows your current courses and is the first page you see when you log in to Canvas.

How do I communicate with my instructor and my classmates?

Using Canvas, send emails to your instructor or to your classmates without needing to switch to an email provider (such as Gmail or Outlook).

How do I find lecture materials?

Most instructors organize course materials in modules that provide both an at-a-glance view and a paged view. If you do not see content in modules, ask your instructor where this information can be found. Some instructors may use Panopto to record and share lectures. These recorded lectures can be found in the course or on the Panopto mobile app.

How do I post in discussion boards and reply to classmates?

Meet with peers, pose questions, or demonstrate your understanding of course material in your Canvas course discussion board. Consider drafting posts and other long-form online content in Microsoft Word or other word processing application.

How can I find assignments and when they’re due?

Many instructors incorporate assignments into a weekly module. If not, assignments may be accessed in the Assignments and Syllabus area of your course and in the Calendar area of Canvas.

How do I take a quiz?

Instructors may assign a quiz or a test for students to take in Canvas.

Where do I access my grades and any feedback from faculty?

Find grades and other feedback from your instructor in Canvas.

Where do I get help for Canvas?

The Support link in Canvas provides different support options and resources, including 24/7 support via chat or phone.

What library resources are available online?

The Northeastern Library and its staff are dedicated to providing research assistance to students, faculty, and staff remotely. Below is a list of library resources and services available online. Ask a librarian for additional questions and assistance with Library services.
